We highly esteem our Filipino scientists whose extraordinary talent and values have gained laurels for our country. Proper recognition may not be in place in the past, but our early scientists persevered until they made successful inventions of tremendous benefit to our country and to the world.
Presently, Philippines has already felt the need to give incentives to deserving youths. House Bill 812 known as the Gifted Children and Science-Oriented Youth Act identifies and supports gifted children for proper development. Another bill also upgrades salaries and offers scholarships to science, math and engineering graduates for a stronger foundation on science and math in the country’s secondary schools.
The country’s National Academy of Science and Technology is the recognition and advisory body on science and technology. The Ramon Magsaysay and the SIDI (Scientific Inventions, Discoveries and Innovations) Awards also helps in giving due honor to Filipino scientists and inventors.
Intel Science Fair is another great motivator for young scientists to compete internationally offering substantial monetary prizes to the winners.
He was the class valedictorian both in primary and secondary schools in Batangas. He finished BS Mechanical Engineering and Master of Science in Aeronautical Engineering in US then Doctor of Science in Physics in Paris, with the last two as summa cum laude.
He invented 30 important aircraft devices and equipment which included the videophone. He had many awards including the Cultural Heritage Award for Science Education and Aero Engineering.
He was once Trebel Music Corporation’s president. His work, talent and passion for music spurred him to invent Karaoke Sing Along System, piano keyboard stressing device, piano tuner’s guide among his twenty total inventions.
He discovered Vazbuilt modular housing and fencing technology using prefabricated panels to building a home which is typhoon, earthquake, fire and termite resistant. Easy assembly for building and dismantling for transfer of prefab parts cost less with less manpower and no heavy machine requirement.
He hails from Iguig, Cagayan Valley whose father was a farmer. He is a B S Electrical Engineering cum laude from Mapua Institute of Technology. He finished MS in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in Stanford University when Boeing Company hired him as design engineer in US. His education, talent and exposure working with top computer companies paved the way for his great contributions to the advancement of the computer world.
He is known for developing and manufacturing chips which enhanced computer technology and internet world. Besides his passion in developing advanced chips, he is also a successful entrepreneur. He manages his own companies like Mostron and Chips & Technology in Silicon Valley, California among many others. Despite being a busy multimillion dollar tycoon, he has still found time visiting and donating a modern computer center in his school in Cagayan Valley.
He recognized the special substance found in Aspergillus fungi in 1949 and submitted a sample to his employer based in Indiana, Elli Lilly Co. who secured a patent for the antibiotic. In 1952 the company commercially produced and generically named the product Iloson. This substance is now known as erythromycin which is an alternative and prescribed to persons with allergic reaction to penicillin.
There are many more Filipino scientists whose works have powerful impact to our country and to the world. We may not be able to feature them but we regard them as our all time heroes and heroines.
